Chapter Twelve

The meeting with my informant had gone better than I’d hoped. Intel was that the cops believed Patrick Dorman was in touch with some nasty characters—a fan club, of sorts—and that they were helping him lay low. He’d given me a possible address, but said the police weren’t planning on storming the location immediately, in case Dorman hadn’t yet made it there. They didn’t want to give him any heads up that they might be onto the location, and so sending him running again. I wasn’t sure how I’d go about getting access to either people or a location if the police were already watching the place, but if I could narrow down his position, it would make things easier. I still wanted the man dead, and I wouldn’t rest until he was.

I hated being away from Jolie, however, and I hurried back, wanting to be near her again. How was I going to survive years in prison without her? It troubled me how the police suspected she’d had some kind of involvement in her father’s escape, and I hoped there would be a way I’d be able to change things after I’d been arrested for his murder. I didn’t know how I’d prove what had really happened, or if Jolie would keep quiet about the twisted but very real relationship that had sprung up between us, but the last thing I wanted was for her to do time because of me.

Urgency pushed at my back. I already felt as though I’d been away from Jolie for too long.

I slowed as I approached the car. The passenger door stood open, but I couldn’t see any sign of Jolie. Had she gotten out to do something? Why wouldn’t she have shut the door behind her? My stomach churned with unexpected nerves. Surely, she wouldn’t have just wandered off? She knew what was at stake here.

The possibility that she’d run struck me in the chest. She’d told me she had nowhere to go, and hadn’t even left when I’d given her the opportunity, but had all that been a lie? It wouldn’t be the first time she’d fooled me into thinking she felt differently. The pain of her possible betrayal was sharp and bright, stealing my breath. But I knew it didn’t make sense.

I pushed away my emotional reaction and tried to think clearly. Why would Jolie feel the need to run when I’d already given her the choice to leave and she’d refused to? It didn’t make sense.

I resisted the urge to call her name, not wanting to draw attention to myself. I was still a wanted felon—assuming the men at the marina had reported me, which I was pretty certain they would have done. I couldn’t find out what had happened to Jolie or locate her father if I was behind bars.

A frown pulled down my brow, and I planted my hands on my hips, trying to get an idea about what might have happened.

I sucked in a breath.
